KLM Airlines is a Dutch airline company. The oldest airline in the world operating with its original name, KLM is one of the top European airline choices. Because of Dutch trade links, KLM boasts an impressive amount of destinations, working out of its main hub in Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport.
I’ve personally used KLM airlines a number of times, and compared with the other European choices, I’d say it’s in the top 3 easily. Amsterdam is a convenient stop-off for long haul flights around the world, and Schiphol airport, whilst quite far from Amsterdam Central is a decent airport in terms of planning, services and quality. The only strange thing I find about the airport is that the security check in is right next to the gate, in some ways this is a bit inconvenient since security checks aren’t known for their orderly and comfortable nature. Another interesting part of the Schiphol airport is that they have self-luggage check in, where you place your luggage yourself in a enclosure that whisks it away, I’m not sure if this was really that much efficient than the standard check-in desk, and dealing face to face with an attendant, but at any rate, you’d only be dealing with that trip starts in Amsterdam or returns directly.
The KLM flights themselves are basically what you’d expect from any good quality airline, you get what you pay for, and so economy is quite basic like most airlines, the international flights are however slightly better in quality of service compared to it’s competitors. I’ve only ever experienced friendly staff and the flights never feel uncomfortable in any reasonable aspect.
The only negative I really found about KLM was the food, not necessarily horrible food, just not very special, and it’s not that you expect brilliant airline food anyway, as it’s known for it’s general low quality. But nevertheless I feel a couple of KLM’s competitors do much much better with food, offering a greater variety of things that are high quality, but maybe my opinion on the food is just my personal preference and not a factual indication of its quality.
The other general aspects of flying are quite similar to most airlines, in terms of luggage allowance and cost, KLM is basically the same as everyone else. I think the main aspect of what makes KLM better is the customer service, and the general demeanor of the staff, they are very friendly and polite, which must mean they treat their staff well comparatively to other airlines. This essentially mirrors much of Dutch society in how they treat people better generally, and are a bit more friendly when compared with some of their neighbors.
Overall, I’d recommend flying with KLM if you have the choice of European airlines for international long haul or short flights.
